Siegburg is a city on the move, yet it retains its organic structure and special flair. The particular mixture of the district town: attractive and charming, modern yet serene. Siegburg offers a diverse range of cultural events and leisure activities. Art, music and literature enthusiasts can enjoy sophisticated exhibitions, concerts, readings and theatre performances. Regular events such as the Humperdinck Music Festival or the Siegburg Literature Weeks provide cultural highlights throughout the year. With the Rhein-Sieg-Halle, opened in 2006, a venue with state-of-the-art technology and large audience capacity was added, which not only hosts the city’s theatre season but also enriches Siegburg’s culture with its own varied programme. The town is a popular destination for day-trippers, but growth in this sector also carries risks: investigations into pickpocketing and shoplifting, as well as thefts from vehicles, therefore fall within the remit of our detectives in Siegburg.
The district town is connected to Bonn via the Siegburg railway (City Line 66), which during peak hours runs every 10 minutes over the Kennedy Bridge and Konrad Adenauer Bridge. Line 66 also provides access to Sankt Augustin. Since 2003, Siegburg has been connected to the Cologne–Rhein/Main ICE high-speed line. For this purpose, the town received a new station building with surrounding shops. Furthermore, Siegburg lies on the motorways A 560 (to Bonn and Hennef) and A 3 (Frankfurt–Cologne) as well as federal roads B 8 and B 56 – improving its regional connectivity significantly in recent years.
Not only can Siegburg residents reach the next major city quickly, but visitors can also arrive in Siegburg and leave again just as fast. Therefore, the town, especially after the expansion of the station and the shopping area around it, is a popular “target” for thieves. From the train – into the next shop – take something – and be gone again. Or in the crowded shopping and station area, grab a handbag quickly and disappear with the next train – there are many possibilities. Siegburg’s growing infrastructure therefore makes it a frequent operational location for our detectives.
In just a single year, the district administration and the 19 towns and municipalities in the Rhein-Sieg district incurred €124.4 million in new debt. This brought the public sector’s liabilities in the district to a new record of €2.037 billion. This is according to the latest state statistics on municipal debt. Siegburg itself ranks highest in the district with per capita debt of €8,225 and also holds first place nationwide. In absolute terms, the district town remains unchallenged. The debt mountain has risen to €327 million (all figures 2013).
In addition to public debt, residents also carry personal debt. The average income in Siegburg is €18,000, about €2,000 below the North Rhine-Westphalia average. This can lead residents to commit offences such as theft and burglary. While the Siegburg police department has seen a general decrease in offences in the past year, the rising number of residential burglaries is a concern. There were a total of 23,832 offences. Unfortunately, the clearance rate fell by 1 % compared with the previous year (2014).
